Earth Day Lake Tahoe Style

earth in a glass globe

Since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated around the world to heighten our awareness and appreciation of the natural environment. As environmental groups began working together, the movement resulted in establishing the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act.

Those who live and recreate in the Lake Tahoe basin are drawn to the natural beauty of an undisturbed landscape. However, there have been many ongoing initiatives that work to protect the environment from the pressures of tourism.

Lake Tahoe and Truckee had EV charging stations long before many other areas. The Keep Tahoe Blue initiative has been operating since 1957 to protect the lake's clarity. The Town of Truckee launched Keep Truckee Green to coordinate the planning and implementation of Truckee’s waste reduction and climate change actions.

This year, bring the entire family to enjoy the Earth Day events around Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

Keep Tahoe Green Fixit Clinic

April 24th 2023  4pm – 7pm

Truckee Roundhouse

The Town’s sustainability program is hosting a Fixit Clinic to allow residents to recycle and repair household items. Bring your broken electronics, furniture, clothing, outdoor gear, and other items requiring repair. “Fixit Coaches” from the Truckee Roundhouse will be on hand to assist you through the repair process.

At past Fixit Clinics, they’ve repaired items from toaster ovens, wooden chairs, to lamps, puffy jackets and denim. This is an excellent way to enjoy Earth Day with the entire family.

Children will learn to appreciate how to repair items rather than purchasing new. All tools are provided, and all ages welcome! From athletic gear to broken computers, learn ways to give your items a second life.

The event will be held on April 24 from 4-7 p.m. at Truckee Roundhouse – located near Tahoe Food Hub at the Truckee Airport 12116 Chandelle Way Suite E3.

The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival 2023

April 15th 2023  11am to 5pm

Village at Palisades Tahoe

Another Earth Day celebration takes place at the Village at Palisades Tahoe. This community event allows kids and adults the opportunity to learn about recycling, composting, alternative energy, and sustainability through hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy.

This event has become a community tradition to learn about sustainable products and services offered by local organizations and businesses. You’ll have the opportunity  to meet with local area nonprofits that share Earth Day values. The venue also offers music and local entertainment.

Their goal is to connect the community with the people and resources found in our region who foster innovation, initiate change and ultimately implement an equitable partnership for a green planet.

Participants are encouraged to bring their lithium battery or any of your old rechargeable devices for recycling. They’ve partnered with Redwood Materials and the Rotary Clubs of Incline Village and the Incline Interact Club to host an on-site battery recycling drop off at the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival.

Bring your old lithium-ion batteries and phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, and any other device with a lithium-ion battery at the Redwood Materials booth to have it properly recycled.
